Frequently Asked Questions
What Are Dance Programmes (Levels)?
CallerLab have organised the moves of American Square Dancing into eight "Programmes", often referred to as "levels".
Each programme contains a new list of moves, but builds on any previous programme (except, of course, the Basic Programme). They are therefore not self-contained.
The first programme that new dancers learn is the Basic Programme. This was recently separated from the Mainstream Programme and contains the first 52 moves. However, any new dancers will be dancing complete dances long before knowing all 52!
The Mainstream Programme contains only the next 17 moves. This is the level usually expected of Square Dancers at dances advertised as "Mainstream" and should be achievable within a year of starting to learn.
After dancing for a year or two, many dancers will feel that they woul;d like to learn a little more, and go on to the Plus Programme. This contains another 30 moves — not necessarily any more difficult than those already covered, but often just adding some more variation.
Many dancers are happy to stop at Plus. However, for those who want a littl more, there are the two Advanced Programmes, A1 and A2. These levels contain as many new moves as all of the preceeding levels combined, but will appeal to those who like to treat their dancing as a mental excercise!
The remainingn Challenge Programmes (C1 to C4) will appeal to really skilled dancers — and callers!
